“HELP, I’M NEXT!”

A strong opening beat keeps you from getting nervous. Your brain cells are filled with all the thoughts and emotions that occur within your character before the scene begins, so there is no room for doubt or hesitation. Your fear is replaced by the work that is required to answer those five questions about your character. When your character thoughts are strong, they erase the nervous thoughts that you may have (e.g., “Will they like me?” “Am I prepared?”).

• Keep your opening beat simple. Don’t rush into the lines. Sometimes just a simple thought can help you connect to your first unit.

• Don’t use pantomime or props for your opening because it takes the focus away from your reading.

• A reaction to another character can be as powerful as starting the scene with dialogue. Be specific about your choice!

• Remember, the opening beat is to feed you, not to impress the casting director.
